The Body Isn’t Broken. It’s Protecting You.

Imagine you’ve spent years walking through life expecting disappointment.

Someone cancels plans, and your mind says, “See? People always leave.”

Your child has a wonderful day, and before you can fully celebrate it, another thought appears: “Don’t get your hopes up. It probably won’t last.”

If this sounds familiar, it doesn’t mean you’re negative.

It doesn’t mean you’re broken.

It means a protective part of you learned long ago that anticipating the worst felt safer than being surprised by it.

Your nervous system isn’t just storing memories. It’s making predictions.

It scans your environment looking for evidence that matches what it already believes. If life taught you that people weren’t reliable, your brain becomes remarkably efficient at noticing every sign that confirms it. Not because it’s trying to hurt you, but because it’s trying to keep you safe.

The beautiful thing about healing is that we don’t shame this protector.

We get curious.

“What are you afraid would happen if we fully celebrated this win?”

“What would it mean if life actually became safe?”

“What are you protecting me from?”

Often, underneath the vigilance is a younger part who remembers the pain of hope being crushed.

Healing isn’t convincing yourself that nothing bad will ever happen again.

It’s teaching your nervous system that you no longer have to live as if danger is around every corner.

You can begin noticing moments of safety.

Moments of connection.

Moments of beauty.

Moments that remind your body, “We’re not there anymore.”

The more your nervous system experiences these moments, the more it learns that survival isn’t the only way to live.

Because your body isn’t broken.

It’s been protecting you.

And when it finally realizes it’s safe enough, it can begin doing something even more beautiful.

It can begin living.
